     William Shields was born on 19 September 1828 at Missouri.4 He was the son of Thomas Shields and Frances Johnson.3 Conflicting evidence places his birth in September 1833 at Missouri.2 William married Mary Jane Mannion on 8 May 1872 at Fayette, Howard County, Missouri.5 William died on 11 September 1902 at age 73 years, 11 months and 23 days at Fayette, Howard County, Missouri.5,4 He was buried at Mount Gilead Cemetery in Fayette, Howard County, Missouri.4
     

William served in the military enlisted in the Confederate service between 1860 and 1865. William participated in the Boonville and Lexington battles, and in several of the others that followed in which Price's army took part. While with General Poindexter he was captured at Laclede, and afterwards confined in the military prisons of St. Louis and Alton about six months. After this he rejoined PRICE and was with his command in the last campaign in this state. He continued in the service until the general surrender at Shreveport, Louisiana.5
